Monday 8/7/85

Lucy’s a little upset about Steven – she’s restless. There’s something bothering her. Ate a Mars Bar this arvy – great way to start a diet, huh? BUT…. played ‘get the frisbee off Julia’ which REALLY wore me out. Then I went to aerobics. Now I’m pretty well ded!!! Haven’t done any HW (great start to the new semester, huh?) or packed my school bag. It’s 9:00. Might stay up or wake early in the morning (← impossible!!!) Am weak!!! Everyone else has grown over the hol’s so I don’t stand out too much anymore!

Tuesday 9/7/85

Nana’s BIRTHDAY. Mum went to a clairvoyant yesterday (a friend of Duffy’s) It’s frightening how accurate she was!! (She taped what she told mum) Anyhow, she said that things are gonna pick up in every aspect – socially, health, fitness, finance!! Yo!!! The house will be finished..!! [Hmm, I don’t recall any huge changes in fortune, health etc…] Dad went & she said about Julia would have a job related to animals & I would be a nurse “or something more”. & would have many letters to my name (degree??!) [Well, as a Fitness Therapist, I do kind of fit that bill: in the health & wellness industry I care for people. And the letters after my name? Well so far I can claim “Elissa Coxen BA Dip. Fit” Does that qualify?] But I don’t wanna be a nurse or doctor or whatever…I want something to do with clothes. [No great surprise there. It’s fascinating that interests & passions can change so greatly in life.] Went to Nin’s for tea. Julia was shitty. No prezzy’s yet. Hilary said there’s a postal delay → walked near Tim today. Felt stiff Just kept walking fast – no smile on face

Wednesday 10/7/85

MY BIRTHDAY!!! Wot’d I get? So far, $90 in cash and 1 present from mima & fi, but it was a beauuuty. A mug with a ballon, a sticker, two biros, two mini butterfly clips, a toy tug boat & a rubber & filled to the top with boiled lollies YUM!! Ate so much today – disgusting. Generally a good day!! (can’t believe it cos’ I was at skool!) Robbo’s came over after tea. We talked & laughed!! Found out, too, that Steven B’s a Cancerian. Was born on the 8th July!!! Julia told Fiona about Tim today. Tried to tell her I don’t like him anymore – somehow, I don’t think she believed me. Did a big runny shit. Now my anus is sore. [Hmm, brings to mind Johnny Cash’s “Burning Ring of Fire”. This WAS a private diary, remember. I highly doubt I ever expected anyone to read this in my lifetime… My how things Change!]

Thursday 11/7/85

I don’t believe it!!! Jemima came to visit me!! On her own!! AND Fiona isn’t going with her, Brent, Steven & Anna after all [to the Cairns Show] (she must have presumed she was.) So I’ll ask her (mima said I should. She wanted to invite us, but thought it’d be boring for us etc) Also, am gonna “make a list” of all the people who’re going on Thursday night so we know who we’ll see!! [I’m not sure why, but I always had a fascination with how many & which people I would see at the Show. When I was younger I remember actually taking a tiny little notebook & pen with me and recording who I saw. To what end? I have no idea. Perhaps something to do with an un-expressed social drive?] Christian band performed at lunchtime. Man! I see God, freek me out!! Nah! Kidding!! Happy day today!! Believe it or not. COLD, too. Steven B. is a hunk!!!

Friday 12/7/85

Fiona’s happy she’s coming to the show with me – she told me how confused she was, not knowing whether she was going with mima or not, but now is excited and determined to stay away from Lucy, if possible. Lucy pesters me all the time saying “when’ll we go?” I feel sorry for her – but I just can’t stand her. Went late-nite tonight. Got a treadly pair of jeans $50 & a grandpa shirt $20 (couldn’t get red – so got white) love ’em! Also got 3 prs earrings for $5. Red & white & 2 prs black & white. [Red & white] are the best. Have $30 left. Wanna buy some shoes & nail polish, yet. can’t afford it! Am not in any events 4 carnival. I got out of it!! * I hope Tim goes to the show on Thursday & we run into him!!!

Saturday 13/7/85

Woke early (shit!). Dad came at 9:00. I worked for 4½ hours (cause there was not enough work for more money.) On the way home, got a Sly Cone & stopped at Megan Close house. Looked around – is filthy dirty & terrible colour schemes. WRECKED!! Came home and …. I dunno! Watch’d a bitta TV, ate. Now watching OZ AID concert. Goes from 9:00pm 13th to 1:00pm 14th July. Want to watch it all!! Going out around 10:00 tomorrow. This is HISTORY, man!! And I’m gonna watch it!! [This was one of a number of musical ‘Aid’ events held worldwide to stimulate fund-raising for famine relief in African nations such as Ethiopia. The marathon concerts were held in a number of cities ‘simultaneously’. Sunday 14/7/85

Went to bed at 12:00 last night. We couldn’t keep our eyes open! Decided that most of the good acts like Wham! Go West etc would be on in the daytime when more people would see them. Was wrong. Only just saw Wham! (one song), saw Madonna! but tears 4 fears & Go West weren’t even there. At 11:00 mum & Geoff went to lunch at people’s place. Nana looked after us. Around 1:00 petra came – went to park – talked ’bout show. Dianne & Kerry came around 4:00. Rang mum & Geoff they got here 4:30. Rest of arvy watched TV & scribbled in mags. Chook for tea. Played their Trivial Pursuit, shit it’s hard!

Monday 17/6/85

Got 61½/70 for BP and 46/50 for art (92%) Made to do corrections for exam in maths which got me shitty. Last thing I wanted was my maths mark back. Started javelen in PE, too – Alan W. arms around me – big jock! and I didn’t enjoy “every minute of it.” Got my history assignment completed minus the conclusion will write out neatly tomorrow. Am tired. Want to ride this week – have to ask the others. No one is buying my badges anymore. Didn’t go to aerobics tonight. No more HW this week! Are cutting up toads in science tomorrow YUK!! might not be having a free dress day on Friday cause last time hardly anyone paid their 20c fee – SHIT!

Tuesday 18/6/85

Boring today – besides, we cut up toads. Sickening. I nearly spewed when they cut open the large intestine and all the poo & shit came out. YUK. Moody day. Went to oval at Big Lunch. Tim has left for holidays already, I think. I haven’t seen him in the past two days. Handed in history assignment – now no more homework! YAHOO!! Bluelight is the 29th (Sat. in the middle of the holidays) Don’t have much to say tonight! Are riding thursday, now. Played frisbee with Jules this arvy. Was good! Am tired. Mum’s going to Mackay on the Bluelight weekend in the hol’s. That’s great, huh? Could miss out on this one, too.

Wednesday 19/6/85

Anna dropped Prabon today and Natasha thought she was being a smart bitch, Firstly, Anna is ‘tired’ of Prabon… she doesn’t ‘love’ him anymore – she’s bored. He cried & swore so much when she told him. He even said he could feel he would do something stupid. Natasha has “Trivial Pursuit” and we played it in History. The Q’s are really hard, so on the bus it snidely commented, “Elissa, is my Trivial Pursuit game not good for you?” I said “why?” & she & her fiendish accomplice laughed. Happy day. Played frisbee again. Got 4 new bras. Taking 3 back (cup too small) & other one cup too big, but have to keep it.

Thursday 20/6/85

RIDING TODAY!! Was fun!! Justine was so slow. She must be unfit. Played Trivial Pursuit in History – it was Ainslie T’s. Hard – !!!!!! Most of the day I had my jumper off – it was hot. Prabon had an accident. Blacked out yesterday. Now thinks Anna is still going with him. But Anna thinks that’s all a big story to make her feel bad. [a ‘faked’ amnesia?] Prabon is “childish” and trying not to believe that Anna doesn’t love him. Tired!! Last Day tomorrow, WO!! Also the shortest day of the year, I think. I’m bugared. I have to go to sleep, now. I’m sure I’ve forgotten to say something.

Friday 21/6/85

LAST DAY!!! Yo!! Fiona misst the bus – so I assumed she wagged it with Jemima. Report Card:- am generally happy – but want to do better in Maths, Art & BP wore different shoes, shirt & jumper – wasn’t roused on, but Anna had litter detention just for wrong shoes. Roffy never got to her, so she didn’t do it. Played Trivial Pursuit in most lessons today. Adrienne said “Have a good holiday, Elissa”, as I got off the bus!! I said “Thanks, Adrienne!” Also waved to Fran. [These were all ‘popular girls’ at school. I would’ve been chuffed about the attention.] Played lotsa frisbee this arvy. Am really gonna try hard next semester. Really hard. This one is most important. Will do better. Hope my holiday’s are fun – not boring & lonely.

Saturday 22/6/85

Today has been exceptionally cold. It is freezing, now. (we’re watching the movie) Expected 10ºC tonight – Goody!!! Today lazed around (did a bit of frisbee) until decided to go to Earlville to checkout the “ambition” sale, but Thorsebornes came to look at the house, just as we were ready to go. Didn’t go after all cos’ they left at 11:30 Spent most of arvy filling new photo album. Played some more frisbee & watched TV. Geoff came with Kentucky Fried Chook & Pizza. [Oh my god – BOTH of those poisons? Euch!] Yummy!! Lotto’s finished – movie’s on again. See ya!

Sunday 23/6/85

When I woke up, I started writing a list of all the pop bands & singers I could think of & I spent the whole morning (& a little of the afternoon) doing this, then typing them out. Then I had to dress for Chris & Gary’s party. It was boring until the guests left. (we watched a crap-shit video). We stayed for tea. Was cold. Walked to pizza shop (Yes, we did get to see Countdown) Pizza took ages. Picked out videos. God, Chris’s dad’s funny. He doesn’t have any shame either. Missed out on “Kramer Vs Kramer” because others wanted to watch video “Bachelor Party”. Was funny! The other one wasn’t so good: “Dr. Detroit“.

Monday 10/6/85 [Queen’s Birthday Holiday]

Got all my history exams questions done. It took all day, however. Had a little trouble with maths. English & History exams tomorrow, though. My neck is out. Boring study today. ate little, but wot it was, was fattening. Is late; 9:30. Must go to bed, now. Don’t wanna run late tomorrow. Weather is getting warmer again, too. Wind has dropped a little, too. Julia had trouble studying, I tried to help her – but being stubborn, & couldn’t penetrate her skull. the dry patches on my skin are healing up! I think.

Tuesday 11/6/85

English was a stuff-up. Totally mucked up!! History I was surprised how quickly I got it done, but I’m sure I’ve dropped in my ability to express myself correctly. Today was a ‘bad omen’. Anna has lost ½ tooth in her bottom row. Jay plugged a cockshuttle [!] (shuttlecock, I mean.) and it hit her in the jaw. The tooth ‘snapped’ & lodged in the gum of her tongue (underneath) Pain!! She got the nerve covered but has to wait till Monday for a cap!! OUCH. Weather warming up. Is 8:45. Must study. Am bugared too.Last exam day tomorrow. Wore my hair different today looks nicer

Wednesday 12/6/85

German-Ha!, Art Ha! Ha! and maths – Ha! Ha! Ha! Ge-stuffed day to-day! [‘Ge-stuffed’ = me taking the piss out of the German language] Rushed through maths didn’t do 3 sums. Our speech concert is on a Sunday – I think this weekend I need a pair of black tights cos our costume is a tuxedo jacket, white shirt & bow tie (with the tights.) Barely see Tim anymore. Anyhow, thinking about meeting Steven B!! Could be good! [After hearing the ‘Looks are everything’ attitude? How soon we forget.] Movie is on now. Might watch it cos’ my EXAMS ARE OVER! Will do my history assignment all day tomorrow. Want to ride to skool again, soon. I’m tired! Anna’s got a dog bite on her bum now, too (bad luck, eh?) It was that really pesky dog next to McI’s. Walking down the road it charged out & Polly ran – Anna stood still like you’re s’posed to but it bit straight through her skirt & knickers (leaving no holes in material, just skin)

Thursday 13/6/85

Got ½ a page of my history assignment done & I had 3 spare periods (ie the whole day!) I just couldn’t concentrate! This arvy I got off at Fi’s stop cos’ I thought mima wanted me to, but she just wanted to ask if Lucy was at school again!! Anyway, we went to the school (Freshy) and met Sandra, Lynette & Julie for a game of volleyball (Jemima’s found herself a volleyball.) Was fun!! Laughed so much!! Left around 5:30. Watched TV all night. Haven’t done anymore History assignment either. Wanna watch Mike Walsh show…….

Friday 14/6/85

Maths is bad… I mean, not too bad, but I can let accounting go down the drain. [That’s right! I totally forgot I’d considered Accounting as another potential career path. I think because I loved money, balance and simple mathematics. Knowing accountants now I realise – at least in the Australian tax system – it’s NOT that simple.] 45½/70 ISN’T THAT DISGUSTING?? However, English made up 4 it 8¼/10. Overall % = 82.5. History 35½/50 (Fi failed History 19/50) Geez, I feel sorry for her. German I got 42/55 – not too bad!! & so far, in BP, I have 8½ marks off (she hasn’t finished marking.) Got off at mima’s today. Went to the shop, then to Mrs McI’s to discuss speech. Lucy was at school for a little while, today. I told her everything. [What is this ‘everything’? I really hope it wasn’t about Steven’s ‘rejection’ based on ‘looks’] From shop, we bought this ‘magic bubble gum’ which EXPLODES in your mouth!! SNAP POP CRACKLE. Went to dinner at a restaurant. Was sooo tired & bored. Stared out the window

Saturday 15/6/85

Ate sooo much!! Was cool. Went to K-Mart in the morning to get black aerobic tights for the speech concert. Also got a sketch book & some tampons. Wasted day. Drew. Did a bit of History assignment. WILL finish it tomorrow. Am watching the movie “10” with Bo Derek. Is so funny!! My hair has gone straight again, now. Few little waves But I used that Henna conditioner, & dried it; scrunched up. IS curly again!! But will probably straighten out when I wake up & brush it tomorrow. [So don’t ‘brush’ it.] Last night & the night before, both my dreams had something to do with skool. Last night’s was about me going with Steven B!! I don’t even know what he looks like!

Sunday 16/6/85

Today was another waste of time. I woke early and simply wasted all morning reading the Sunday papers. (Had 1 really big breakky, too) After small lunch, I did a bit more history assignment, but started to get ready 4 speech concert when mima rang. She rode here, then we left & met Fi at the school. IT was FUN!! Shameful [sure I meant embarrassing, not actually shameful] at times, I s’pose, but fun!! Went home after, (then Mima, Fi & Lucy went) & watched countdown. After looonnngg bath, watched TV. Haven’t done anymore History assignment! (So much for getting it done on Friday arvy. Mr V.S. always gives extensions anyway.

Monday 27/5/85

Hotter today. Sunny, too. Exactly the opposite weather to what we had yesterday. Gave brooches to Sarah, Justine & Lucy. Wore my own. At aerobics, Fi, mima, polly and Carla G. came. I moved away from mima so I didn’t flash, then they all kind of snobbed me off for the rest of the night. Legs are weak & wobbly. [Good, that means I was worked hard.] Got abit of HW done, just the essential stuff. Exams start Fri 7th June, stop 4 long weekend, then go on the 11th 12th & 13th. 10 days away! I have science & BP on Fri; English & History on Tues; Art, German & Maths on Wed & nothing on Thurs.

Tuesday 28/5/85

Went to Earlville this arvy to see the Imitations of the British Crown Jewels. Gorrd!! Must be realllllllllllllllllly expensive!!!! Also got Dolly for June (is alright). and had a look at jumpers. (men’s). Found cheap diamonté earrings, too! Today, in English, was lucky that I didn’t get my go for speech. I haven’t done it, but I’ve got it started!! Periods 6 & 1 have been swapped on day 4’s & 6’s now. Walking to PES, Tim came out of graphics. We walked past with Erica. He acknowledged her with a smile & wave – and – a pang of jealousy hit me!! It can’t be!! (But it is.) I must love him (or have a crush) He doesn’t even know that I exist.

Wednesday 29/5/85

Fiona lied to me today. I rang her up this morning. She said she wasn’t coming to skool because she had a sore throat & headaches. Bullshit. She just wagged it to be with Jemima again. (Like they did last year.) At speech she tried to deny it. Also she said she wouldn’t ride but this arvy I saw her on her bike (while I was on the bus). Today went skating. Was fun but shameful!! I can’t skate anymore!! Didn’t see Tim all day, but Lucy told me she thinks he’s a snob – I’m starting to see a new light. Mini Olympics today were stooopid!! Stopped (thankfully) cos’ of rain. We’re not going to Cooktown anymore now cos’ mum’s realised how Important my exams are (for my Jnr. Certficate) Early-ish nite. Hardly any HW

Thursday 30/5/85

Today went to oval at Big Lunch to watch Anna play netball. Or did she? No, too silly to play a game. [NO idea what that is supposed to mean.] Sally, Michelle I, Michelle T & Rachel were all there too. God they’re funny! Tim was on the oval, too. Justine likes him, too & so does Sally. I think it’s true wot Lucy said – he seems like a “snob” to me, too. (in a way.) Hot today. Fiona had a temperature, but acted fine. selling my FIMO badges now [and there’s the little entrepreneur again!] (As soon as I make an opening batch) 60c ea. Natalie P, & Beka & Sarah & her mum have already ordered!! Am so tired. Want to work solidly this weekend. Mite ride 2morrow. Will ring Fi now.

Friday 31/5/85

JULIA’S BIRTHDAY. mum woke me early & I got cranky, But recovered quickly. “I” (mum) gave her a jewellery stand like mine & a note pad. She also got a white top & around $80 in cash; A record & bracelet & material doilies (yuk) from Amanda – her friend – & a little bag from Melinda. Sally B. was shamed today; Anna told us how Tim found out Sally liked him!! Good hockey game today, too. Got 7 badges made 4 sale tonite. Went 4 a long walk, too. Melinda is sleeping. Went to town. Julia bought some clothes & pr. of shoes out of some of her money. Leonie & Amanda & Janelle never came ’round after all. Want to do lots of HW this weekend if possible.

Saturday 1/6/85

Today was a waste of time for me. I woke, lazed, made 1 more FIMO brooch, bored myself – lazed – ate – mucked around with broken chains (& incidentally, made 2 necklaces!!) Bathed. Watched Countdown when Fi & mim took me to the shop. Home again – Julia vomited. She’s been off all day. (Max is dead) He was run over on Thursday. Poordog. I loved him like my own. [I have no idea to whom ‘Max’ belonged. We certainly didn’t have a dog at that stage and I can’t remember any particular neighbours’ or friends’ pets by the name of Max.] Bill, Mandy & Heath came 4 tea around 6:15. Cameron did not come (to my relief & more so to Julia’s) [My sister had a crush on him, and was painfully shy] Fancy 3 course tea. Am tired. Trying to watch this movie. Is a Repeat. “the fiendish plot of Dr Fumanchu” Got no HW done today

Sunday 2/6/85

Got hardly any sleep last nite. Julia kept waking up & vomiting I lost count how many times she was up. Worst nite’s sleep I’d had in ages. Today was a terrible day. I felt depressed & bored & a little off-colour & just…. different. Did History & science HW. No more Fimo things made. Running late 2 nite. Is already 8:00 & I haven’t bathed. Julia didn’t vomit today – was just cold, then hot etc, had a headache, sore throat & pains & numbness. I Ate quite alot, too. Fiddled around. Washed my face thoroughly when got frustrated over pimples. Am tired. Skool – oh good! I actually can’t wait!! Early nite 4 me. Julia’s staying home

Monday 20/5/85

Lotsa people liked it! (Or said they did, anyhow. I think Tina S. did cos’ she kept saying things all day & Lucy kept looking at me with a smile on her face.) Fi said it was different. Almost everyone got a ‘shock’ when they saw me! Missed out on heapsa BP HW. Is late. I’m tired. Went to aerobics. mim & pol weren’t there cos’ they had hair appointments. Fi had to ride home ‘n’ most of the streetlights in Freshy were off – noone knows why. Aerobics was good. Went to Annette [hairdresser at the local Freshwater Salon] – got another hair appointment. My hair’s top bits are straight again cos’ they’re sun bleached – (when they’re sun bleached they lose their elasticity so I’m gonna get the top re-permed. Is 9:45 Wanna sleep! Nite!!!

Tuesday 21/5/85

Was colder today – looks like we’re in for a cold winter this year! Boring day today. Today after PES, Rachel (D.) held Fi back (Fi told me this later) & said “why doesn’t Elissa become a model? She’s tall, got a good figure, nice hair & is good looking.” FLATTERY!! and to think I thought she didn’t like my haircut!! Made Fi some little things to give her during tomorrow till I give her her prezzy at speech (Not riding 2morrow) out of german plasticine – FIMO which is hardened in the oven (it is there rite now.) Am tired – my eyes are stinging. Gonna check on those plasticines.

Wednesday 22/5/85

FI’S BIRTHDAY!! Angela & Ms Stevenson’s too! She & angela & ms stevenson were skinted!! Angela & Fi in form talk & Mrs Stevenson in our BP class & Fi’s typing class. Those 10 things I made Fi, I hid in her belongings during the day & she got surprised!! My BP test I only got up to half way thru’ the balancing of the ledger a/c’s. Windy & cool at Beach. Went for a ‘quik dip’ and sat ’round till had to go for a walk. Bus came early with all the squash people on it, too. Our bus came late, but when it did come Tim was on it. I thought he liked me, but he doesn’t even know me. Pity. I think I really like him. Na probably not. At Dianne & Kerry’s mum’ll come soon – she’s at Geoff’s Nat. Trust meeting. Am tired. Gotta science test tommorrow.

Thursday 23/5/85

Didn’t learn 4 science, after all (not much) but thought it was pretty easy. Cool again, today. No other skirt but my PE, so my legs were bared to the cold. Boring today. Stayed in most of lunch hour doing art. Little rainy today. At home, rode to shop in a misty rain which (when going fast) stung your eyes. Bought m&m’s & a big packet of mixed lollies. & on way home, who should spring me, but skinner. Gave him a musk stick. Didn’t feel like doing HW, so did necessary stuff, then made an ‘apple’ badge out of that ‘FIMO’ stuff. AM gonna take it out now. A TEAM is finished. Nite Nite!!

Friday 24/5/85

Hate. Boring – Yuk. Wore little apple brooch or badge to skool – but gave it to Angela as a Birthday present. Will make others for myself. Bored today. Fiona was gloomy, made me feel tired & gloomy. Going to town tomorrow – me, Lucy, Justine & Fiona. Didn’t think Fi’d come (cos’ of mima) but she rang me tonite, saying she would. When I got my hair re-‘pazazzed’ mima & fiona came to shop ½ way through. Waited till it was finished, too. Anette didn’t blo-dry it, so it looked Revolting. Looks terrible when it’s wet. Mima & Fi tried to reassure me it was nice but I’ve the feeling they didn’t like it either. Late-ish nite.

Saturday 25/5/85

Time in town went too fast. Fiona bought black shoes & I bought black earrings & lip balm out of the $10 I waz s’posed 2 use on a shirt/jumper/jacket for winter. (But wot can you get out of 10$ these days?) [HA! What can you get for $10 THESE days?!] Saw mima, Fran & Erica in town. At home, moped around, then mima & fiona came around, Got out the FIMO. Beka came ’round. After FIMO cooked, pigged out from the shop, moped around, Beka left & we went to mima’s. She complained about how her outfit looked stupid (but didn’t). I raced home at 5:00 & had a shower. Just starting to put on make up when Lucy came. Beka picked us up at 7:00. Bluelight was boring. Back was good – legs were bad. Mark R. was there – I saw him, he saw me. Sean M. was there, but I didn’t see him (Justine thinks she did) Anthony & Jaqui were there too. Tart. I hate her. [I can’t get believe how much I used such strong emotive words. Then again, I probably was more ‘highly-charged’ in my youth. Thank god I’ve mellowed.]

Today was a big waste. (of time) Woke around 8:30. Grumpy feeling. Lazed around – Did nothing all morning. Finally got out my history and english stuff. Wrote 1 line in English. It was too hard. Didn’t do any HW after all. Had soup for lunch & spent all arvy using FIMO & playing with make-up. After Countdown had shower, pizza for tea & watched TV. Is 8:30 now. Would like to go to bed. Haven’t done any HW. Have at least science, Hist & German that I should have done 4 tomorrow. Goodnight.

Monday 29/4/85

Anna is going with Prabon. It happened at the Bluelight & Megan is too embarrassed to sit with Anna while she’s with him. Anna’s feeling guilty. Had science test not too bad. Also got maths test back 20/25 Best in maths so far this year! Got form for german camp – it’s next week. I know I want to go, & Justine is but I don’t know ’bout anyone else. Jodie T. had a bottle of perfume which she shot Fi & me with at B. lunch – smelt 4 rest of the day. At home, read Dolly (May, new one) until carpet ‘witch’ aunty Hilary sent up, came & mum began laying out 4 the lounge & dining room. [Because mum didn’t earn a great deal, much of our Simon Street house was built with secondhand materials…which these days would be considered VERY cool by the Greenies. Mum had procured all the french doors, the whole kitchen, and some of the external building materials…as well as, evidently, recycling my aunt’s old carpet. I’m so proud of my resourceful mother.] Didn’t do any HW. Man came 2 fix washing machine. Is 8:50. Mum’s starting to carpet her room, now. She won’t stop!!!! [That was SO my mum. She was a real worker, never stopped. If she did, it was lights out!]

Tuesday 30/4/85

Windy & cool. Is definitely coming into winter cos’ its starting to get dark at 6:30. Mr Van Slooten wasn’t here today, thank god. Got on bus (this morning) 2nd last & there were NO SEATS LEFT. Everyone was barred or taken. Julia eventually let me sit on the one she had barred 4 Philip & Brendan (so that they wouldn’t take Anna’s again) [Ah, Hierarchies in Everything. Bus seats?] Have only just realised that my English letters, due tomorrow, I have not even thought about. It is 8:35. Can I get 2 done? Stay tuned folks…..

Wednesday 1/5/85

A Life in Words Good day today. Happy!! (most of the time) Wore white sandshoes – yes, they were white! We cleaned them last night in power clean & they’re white! [‘Power Clean’ was – and still is – one of the best products my father sold. I’m not sure what its active ingredients are, but it DOES do a great job on most things! It’s probably one of his best known and oldest in his product range.] Got science test mark – 15½/25 OH! OH! In german, doing work on adjectives an example was Elissa hat ……… schwester. [In English: “Elissa has ______ sister”] and everyone had to add adjectives – told Jules some ‘o’ the words were nice, some bad. Are doing fantasy drawings in art – have to listen to music from “War of the Worlds” to help ideas. Wish we could do our own dreams, tho. Beach was good – overcast and cold, but warmed up. Went 4 that walk – everyone had to. (Puffed) only got ½ way. Speech was good, mima talked to me! about Bluelight, Brent, kissing Brent…….. At Geoff’s for National Trust Meeting – tired!!

Thursday 2/5/85

TODAY WAS THE DAY!! I GOT MY BRACES OFF [In my original diary, this text was handwritten over three lines. Excited much?] Looks so different (my teeth are too nice for my face!!) [Hmm, there’s a glaring hint about my degree of self-love] Feels funny, like I have wax over them – they’re so smooth! Penwarden, Jenny, Petra, & Marney & Noela didn’t notice at first!!! (Dunno how they could’ve missed it) Beka found out at school in maths today I wrote it on my maths book & she saw – she knew but didn’t tell. Big Yr9 fight today. Anna cried co’s anne & agnes hate her 4 spending so much time with Praybon so she told him she wouldn’t hang ’round. How sad. Paid money for German Camp. Robbo’s (- Peta had work) came for tea left 8:45. I did get my english letters done. Bed at 10:00.

Friday 3/5/85

Today – I liked this day very much. Woke early – teeth feel like I’ve still got braces, but are covered in wax. Hardly anyone noticed my teeth, without my help in making them notice!! Fiona knew (straight away, almost) that I was lying when I wrote that I had Larangitis. [There was never any ‘pulling of wool’ over her eyes.] Double religion was boring (but Tim’s in Anglican too) think he was watching me, sometimes. English did spelling & handed in. Finished painting plate. Must do 5 articles in clay over weekend. Cross Country Run I came 23rd in age group & 2nd in age group for Trinity. [Well this is a surprise to me… I didn’t think I could run.] Went with Deyanne. Lucy was 2 far behind 4 her & Fi & Beka were too far ahead of me. Got home quite early slept! (about 1hr) Yacht Club 4 drinks then take-away pizza at our house. Watching movie – weird. Lateish nite.

Saturday 4/5/85

Woke 7:00. Lazed till 7:30. After Brekky watched TV till ’bout 10:30 when started HW. After “Air waves” [a locally produced TV music video programme], finished maths & all HW, then got clay down from “attic”. Was hard – dismayed me. Won’t get my clay work done, now. Made some more bracelets – another bead one, and a safety pin one. Countdown taped most songs. Julia left for Catherine W’s party 5:30. Watched TV. Am watching movie, now “Tim”. I reckon the ‘movie season’ has started. Good movie last nite, 2nite & “Voyage of the Damned” 2morrow nite! Yesterday I thought mima would come ’round 2 c my teeth cos’ when she waved on her bus I pointed 2 my teeth & she got really excited. But she didn’t come. Shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up.

Sunday 5/5/85

Woke 6:00. Read ‘1984’ till about I don’t know when! But went to Raintrees Sunday Markets & (shame’n’shit!) guess who was there? The one & only Master R, himself. Tried to dodge him much as possible, but at the National Trust stand, I was under the impression he was trying to be seen. He’s grown one hell of a lot taller – brought up some old emotions oh! & of course Julia embarrassed me in front of him. SHAME!! Rest of the day, finished ‘1984’. Around 4:30, bathed (& shaved) ‘Nother late nite – at Dianne & Kerry’s. Watched countdown. Saw footloose on video.

Monday 30/7/84

Hectic morning. Different bus driver – has funny smile & beard & ‘mo’. Boring but fast day. Talked to Sandra F. on way home – told her I’d live next to her – she shrugged it off. Watched Olympic Games in History.

Tuesday 31/7/84

LUCY’S BIRTHDAY up at 7:00 watched Olympics. Took 80c for lunchtime party. Fi’s german class watched video – we couldn’t it was booked out. Got Dolly & read article ’bout a girl who lost heapsa weight made me more determined now. Today went so slow.

Wednesday 1/8/84

Watched Olympics in am again (as per usual). After a boring school I got off bus to meet mim a (she left CHS sports carnival at 1:00 & decided to meet me off the bus) MIRACLE!! Met Fi & went to shop. Two guys whistled at us & we sped off to our tree. They found us when we’d finished eating & chased us & we chased them all arvy (Even thru’ speech!) But after, they had to go to a BMX thingo. I didn’t do any HW xept BP.

PAPA HAD A HEART ATTACK THIS MORNING. THEY GOT THERE JUST IN TIME. I thought he was dead. He’s alright now. Toni has a racer Big Whoop! Watched Olympics in history & BIG Lunch. PM: my bag broke, i.e. 1 handle. Also, mim, Fi & elisia came round & we went to the shop & guess wot! We used tactics but Wayne & Bevan (YR 10 – Saints) cornered us. Asked mim & Fi to Space Skate (Elisia was translator between the 2 parties) but mim & Fi said they couldn’t skate. The guys said there were ‘other’ things they could do. Filth! But mim & Fi made up stories about big hunky boy friends!

Friday 3/8/84

Got up early (Luc rang to see what I was wearing) After little lunch received our assigned areas & ropes & began jumping at 12:00 till 3:00. Was great fun!! Had ‘showers’ under the hoses & drank 1 Litre water! Got burnt, too. Wrote to Jodie & Mike tonite & also to Papa, Uncle John & Co. Julie H. & her mum came round (late nite)

Saturday 4/8/84

Lost every game at tennis today. 1/4 -0, 2/3 -1, 3/3 -2 Bad!! Mr B. rode in with us – it was his turn on the parent roster. Beka didn’t go because her team had a ‘bye’. SO WHAT? Bitch. [I’m not sure why Beka deserved the name-calling here?] At home; prepared for Lucy’s party. Was fun (movie was slack). Toni, Karen & Rebecca P. & me rode to the shop on way home. Then went separate ways.

Sunday 5/8/84

Very slack day. Watched TV until did english essay. Ate & Ate & Ate. Mum seriously thinks I have a tapeworm. (I’m FAT.) Bed at 9:00. Mim & Fi came up in the morning to see where on the slab was my bedroom. That’s all. They went home, & I didn’t see them for the rest of the day.
